Teaching
Together with a number of my colleagues, I have been involved in developing and running a masters programme called “Learning, Communication and Information Technology¿. The aim of this programme is to address questions of how the conditions for learning are changed as information technology are brought into the picture. Central to the educational programme is the relation between technology, individuals, groups and activities.
Today, the number of researchers within the field of education that are taking an interest in making detailed studies of communication and action are on the rise. The increasing availability of affordable video equipment have contributed to this development, but, a perhaps more central explanation is the theoretical and methodological move that can be traced in the literature. There is a growing body of video-based studies of social interaction in educational settings that build on a number of analytical concerns and assumptions adopted from ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. Due to the increasing interest in these issues we have developed a course that is primarily aimed at PhD students who in their research are working with questions about learning and who rely on the use of interaction data (such as video- or voice-recordings). The central theme of the course is the relation between interaction, as manifested in all its idiosyncratic details, and the general and often very blunt theories of learning.
